How to Find the Day of the Week
Every date in history corresponds to exactly one day of the week, and that mapping is fixed the moment a calendar system is defined — there's no ambiguity, only arithmetic. The Gregorian calendar (the one most of the world uses today) repeats on a 400-year cycle: over any 400-year span there are exactly 146,097 days, and since that number divides evenly by 7 (giving 20,871 whole weeks), the entire weekday-to-date pattern is guaranteed to repeat exactly every 400 years. Working it out for a single date, though, comes down to counting how many days sit between that date and a date whose weekday you already know, then finding the remainder after dividing by 7.
The Doomsday Algorithm (Mental Math)
1. Certain dates always fall on the same weekday within any given year — called that year's "Doomsday": 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12, the last day of February, plus 5/9 & 9/5, and 7/11 & 11/7 (mnemonic: "I work 9-5 at 7-11"). 2. Find the century anchor — the Doomsday weekday for years ending in "00": 1800s = Friday, 1900s = Wednesday, 2000s = Tuesday, 2100s = Sunday (the pattern itself cycles every 400 years).3. Adjust for the specific year: let a = ⌊(year mod 100) / 12⌋, b = (year mod 100) mod 12, c = ⌊b / 4⌋. That year's Doomsday = (anchor + a + b + c) mod 7 steps from Sunday.4. Count forward or backward in multiples of 7 from the nearest memorable Doomsday date to your target date — the remainder tells you exactly how many weekdays to shift.— FAQ
