How Due Date Calculation Works
A pregnancy calculator estimates your due date based on the assumption that pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). This is the most widely used method in obstetrics, known as Naegele's Rule. Because ovulation doesn't happen on the same calendar day for everyone, adjusting for your actual cycle length — or working from a known conception date or IVF transfer date instead — produces a more personalized estimate.
🧮 The Three Calculation Methods
Naegele's Rule (LMP method): Due Date = LMP + 280 days | Adjusted: Due Date = LMP + (280 − 28 + cycle_length) daysConception Date method: Due Date = Conception Date + 266 days (38 weeks)IVF Transfer method: Day-3 transfer = Transfer Date + 263 days | Day-5 transfer = Transfer Date + 261 daysTrimester Guide
🌱
First Trimester (Wks 1-13)
The foundation stage — major organs and body systems begin forming while the placenta develops. Fatigue and morning sickness are common as hormone levels rise sharply. This window also carries the highest miscarriage risk, so most first prenatal visits and early screenings happen here.
🌸
Second Trimester (Wks 14-27)
Often called the most comfortable stretch, as early symptoms ease and energy typically returns. The baby grows rapidly and movements ("quickening") usually become noticeable between weeks 18-20, around the same time as the detailed anatomy ultrasound.
🎀
Third Trimester (Wks 28-40)
The home stretch, marked by the fastest weight gain for baby as the lungs and other systems mature for life outside the womb. Appointments become more frequent, and the body begins preparing for labor in the final weeks.

Full Term & Post-Dates (37-42 weeks)
A pregnancy is considered full term from 37 weeks onward, but the due date itself is just an estimate — only around 4% of babies actually arrive on that exact day, with most arriving within about two weeks of it, on either side.
