How do weighted grades work?

A weighted grade splits your coursework into categories — Homework, Quizzes, Exams, and so on — and gives each one a percentage of your final grade rather than treating every assignment equally. First, each category's average is calculated from the assignments inside it (mean of the individual assignment percentages). Then each category average is multiplied by its weight, and those results are added together. So if Exams are worth 50% and you average 80.5% on them, exams alone contribute 40.25 points toward your final grade, while Homework worth 20% at 91.7% contributes 18.34 points, and so on until every category is accounted for.

How do I calculate the score I need on my final exam?

Rearrange the weighted-grade formula to solve for the one unknown score: needed = (target − current × (1 − final_weight)) / final_weight, where current and target are percentages and final_weight is the final's share of your grade as a decimal (30% = 0.30). For example, if you're at 75% going in, want an 80% final grade, and the exam is worth 30%, you'd need (80 − 75 × 0.70) / 0.30 = 91.7% on the final. If the formula returns a number over 100, the target isn't reachable no matter how well you do on the exam.

What's the difference between weighted and points-based grading?

Weighted grading assigns each category a fixed percentage of your final grade regardless of how many points or assignments it contains — a single exam worth 50% counts as much as ten homework sets worth 50% combined. Points-based grading instead adds up every point you've earned across all assignments and divides by every point that was possible, so categories with more total points naturally carry more influence. What percentage is an A, B, or C?

Most US courses use a scale close to A: 90-100%, B: 80-89%, C: 70-79%, D: 60-69%, and F below 60%, though many schools refine this further with plus/minus bands (A- at 90-92%, B+ at 87-89%, and so on) that also map to GPA points on a 4.0 scale.
