ROI Formula and Calculation
Return on investment is the most universal profitability measure because it works for almost anything — stocks, real estate, a business, even a side project. Simple ROI is gross profit divided by cost basis. Annualized ROI (CAGR) spreads that return evenly across each year you held the investment, which is the only fair way to compare deals of different lengths. After-tax ROI applies your capital gains rate to the profit only, showing what you actually keep. For a worked example: $10,000 invested, $13,500 returned after 3 years — that's a 35% simple ROI, about 10.6%/yr annualized, and roughly 28% after-tax at a 20% capital gains rate. For investments with multiple cash flows over time, see our IRR calculator; for a pure average-return breakdown, see our average return calculator.
| Asset Class | Typical Annualized ROI | Total ROI (10yr) |
|---|---|---|
| US Stocks (S&P 500) | ~10%/yr | ~159% |
| Real Estate | 8-12%/yr | 116-210% |
| Bonds | 3-5%/yr | 34-63% |
| Savings Account (HYSA) | 4-5%/yr | 48-63% |
| Business Investment | 15-25%/yr | 305-931% |

| 5-10%/yr | 🟡 Fair | Decent — beats inflation, below stock market average |
| 0-5%/yr | 🔻 Low | Marginal — barely above break-even or at inflation |
| <0%/yr | ❌ Loss | Negative — investment lost value |
